IFALPA’s Successful
FRMS & Runway Safety
Seminar in Jakarta

Safety Seminar was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on August 15 and 16 ,
2017. The seminar was hosted by the Asosiasi Pilot Garuda (APG) in
collaboration with Member Associations AusALPA and ALPA Singapore.
The event was held at Garuda Airlines headquarters which provided
substantial support.
On day one, attendees from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan,
Bangladesh, Thailand, and Australia Member Associations were
welcomed by Garuda CEO Pahala Mansury, IFALPA RVP ASIA/East
Capt. Jaffar Hassan, APG IFALPA Director Capt. Iwan Setyawan
Diyatputra, and AusALPA Vice-President Capt. David Booth.
A presentation on fatigue science, regulations and management followed,
given by Dr. Jarnail Singh (CAA Singapore), Dr. Adam Fletcher (private
consultancy Integrated Safety Support), Capt. Bruce Aberhart
(NZALPA), and Capt. Marcus Diamond (AusALPA Safety & Technical President Director of Garuda Indonesia opening the seminar with
Officer). Indonesia Gong.
The proceedings were then rounded out with an interactive panel on
FRMS in practice featuring the day’s guest speakers and were joined by Photo Courtesy of Ishtiaque Hossain
Capt. Adrian Lim (ALPA-S Technical Secretary), FO Kelvin Kwan
(ALPA-S IFALPA Director), and FO Stuart Beveridge (AusALPA AAP &
HUPER Vice-Chairman). Issues surrounding Just Culture, reporting, and
national culture were discussed in detail.
On day two, a cross-cultural group workshop on Runway Safety,
facilitated by longtime IFALPA safety volunteer and AusALPA Safety &
Technical Consultant, Capt. Brian Greeves, was given. Greeves took the
attendees through the various considerations of forming and operating
Local Runway Safety Teams including airport lighting and signage,
wildlife, rescue/fire services, and runway facilities. The course was
finalized with a group project simulating the management of an airport
runway reconstruction plan.
The seminar was concluded with a farewell speech from Diyatputra,
Booth, and Capt. Ishtiaque Hossein (IFALPA EVP ASIA/PAC). As part
of IFALPA’s mission to promote the highest level of air safety worldwide,
it was proposed that these training seminars be given in other regions
accross the globe.
