18 ICAO SARP DevelOPment 101

as a final quality assurance check of the new
SARPs before they are sent to the ICAO Photo Courtesy of IFALP A
         Council for approval and adoption.
A complementary effort for most SARPs in
the form of Guidance Material takes place
either before, during, or after the SARPs have
been developed depending on the nature of the
issue. IFALPA often has a large role to play in
this and occasionally we co-brand a document
with another organization with the same views
         on an issue.
This generic footprint is repeated dozens of
times throughout the year but only touches
upon the formal process of SARP
development. IFALPA’s day to day work in the
ICAO building goes much deeper as we have
developed close relations with our colleagues
in the Secretariat with an open door policy. For
this reason we continue to hold an office in the
ICAO building in addition to the IFALPA HQ
office two blocks away. When a Member
Association contacts any of the Technical Team
with a safety or technical issue that needs to be
brought to the attention of ICAO, clarification The ICAO ANC Chamber where decisions are made
with respect to ICAO SARPs, or just a simple
inquiry of their respective State Delegation –
we have immediate access to get answers in an
         expeditious manner.
Finally, how can you become involved? We
need you, IFALPA always welcomes new
volunteers that are passionate about a
         particular topic within our Standing
Committee structure or are just interested in
becoming involved in rewarding work with
great colleagues from all regions of the globe.
Every airline pilot is a subject matter expert
because you are out in the system day after day
with a view of the operation that no other
collective group of professionals can provide.
We have opportunities within all of our
committees to make a difference in your
working environment. The logistics of getting
involved start with the support of your
         Member Association.
